7th Advent post–Libra time in 2011 (23 Sep – 22 Oct)

Today is the day we talk about next September/October, when the Sun will be in Libra (from 23 Sep – 22 Oct).  I’ll tell you a bit about what will be going on, and what kind of energies you might be experiencing at that time in 2011.

Libra starts on the Autumnal equinox. That makes Libra the first sign of the season, which astrologers call a “cardinal” sign. Cardinal signs are motivated and initiating; they want to get things done. What kinds of things does Libra like to do? Ruled by Venus, she likes to negotiate and smooth the way, make everyone balanced and happy.  But Libra can be a frustrated sign, too. For one thing, it’s not always easy or possible to bring everyone into agreement. For another thing, Libra sees every opinion, decision, or action as equal. It’s so hard to give weight to any one side of a disagreement, or choose from equally wonderful or awful options. That means that sometimes Libra energy can be paralyzed. Wanting so much to make a decision and get going, but not able to say “yes” to one and “no” to another. This frustration can be crazy-making.  That’s the spectrum of Libra, all the way from “Yes, we agree, now let’s move forward” to “Oh, I just can’t make up my mind!”

Libra Christmas Card

Within that spectrum of energy in September and October of 2011, we have a number of astrological events. Only two days after the Sun enters Libra on 23 September, Mercury, on the 25, joins him in the sign of the scales. Mercury in Libra is diplomatic and suave, communicating with the best interests of everyone at heart. Mercury loves Libra’s high intellectualism, and can talk all night about the best way to forge a new world. Just two days later, on September 27th, a New Moon in Libra starts a cycle of balance and harmony.  Some of your emotional turmoil may calm down a bit during this time, and you can start new projects that include communicating and negotiating. You might even take a few short trips for educational purposes—into the City for a museum tour or to hear a lecture.

The first week of October is quiet astrologically, so you can enjoy the wonderful Libra energy of Autumn. Everything is beautiful, the harvest is in full swing (in the Northern hemisphere, anyway) and Venus rules her airy sign with grace and dignity. On 9 October she moves into Scorpio, where she’s hot, sexy, and passionate.  Two days later on 11 October, there’s a firey, impatient, and possibly cranky Full Moon in Aries. Passions will run deep. And when Mercury joins Venus in Scorpio on 13 October, you’ll be hearing all about those passions.  There’ll be talk of power and sex, secrets and insanity. Luckily, we’ll still have the Sun in Libra for another 10 days, to balance out all the intensity with some light and joyful energy.

The beginning of Autumn, 2011 will be mostly sweet and harmonious, with some darker energy showing up as the nights get longer and the Sun heads into the next sign of Scorpio.

People have asked about the Christmas card in this post. I designed and created this set of Christmas cards. The large, round ornament is a NASA picture of the planet that rules the sign (this is Venus, because Venus rules Libra). The smaller ornament on the right is the glyph (letter) that represents the sign in astrological charts (this one is the glyph that looks like a balance scale). The smaller ornament on the left is a representation of the major symbol of the sign, usually taken from a map of the constellation. (This one is from an old painting of Libra, with the scales pictured.)
