6th Advent Post–Virgo time in 2011 (23 August – 22 September)

{I’m late in posting this today–I’ll just blame it on Mercury retrograde. Ha!}

Today’s Advent posting is the gift of knowing what will be happening astrologically in the late Summer of 2011. The Sun will be in Virgo from 23 August to 22 September.

Virgo is another sign that’s ruled by Mercury. So there is some social energy happening, but mostly Virgo focuses on organization. Sorting, labeling, knowing how much of what is available, where the shortages are, etc. Overseeing the harvest, arranging for the future, that’s what Virgo does really, really well. So when Mercury stations direct in Leo on 26 August, there’s a good chance that all the things that went wrong will begin to line up correctly again. If the Mercury retrograde that started 3 weeks previous gave you a particularly hard time, at least you know that when he turns direct in his home sign of Virgo, you’ll be able to get organized again quickly.

On 30 August, Jupiter stations retrograde in Taurus. When Jupiter slows down, stops, and then goes backwards, much of our optimistic expansion goes with him. Often it’s a time to turn energies inward. Jupiter represents morals and mores, justice and faith. When he’s retrograde, it’s a good time to re-evaluate your moral stances, think about the customs of your own community and how they relate to others, delve into your spiritual goals and see if they still match who you are. Since this is happening during Virgo, be organized about it. Give yourself time and structure in which to ask and answer questions. Maybe do a little meditation each day—just a quick moment, or whatever feels good—on issues that are important to you.

The first week or so of September is fairly quiet astrologically, and then we will have a Pisces Full Moon on the 12th, and Venus will enter Libra on the 14th. Venus rules Libra, so she’s quite happy in her home sign of diplomacy and ideas. And when Venus is happy, the world is happy.

That same week, on 16 September, Pluto will station direct in Capricorn. We will feel that, for sure. Pluto is the god of the Underworld, and he’s been showing us all the corrupt and rotten parts of our old structures and institutions. When he’s retrograde, we delve inward, and often do a lot of work on our own psyches. Since he’s in Capricorn, that work will probably have issues of authority and leadership in it. When Pluto turns forward again, we’ll have a breather from looking at our own, personal selves, and look again at the larger organizations that hold us together. Issues of power and control will arise, so be wary and wise. Don’t fight the system if you’ve no way to win. It’s not a good time to stand on principle—you’ll be plowed under. Wait until the transit has passed.

On 18 September, Mars enters Leo. Mars likes firey Leo, but can get a little arrogant and blustery there. Watch your words, watch your viewpoint. Try to remember that other people are allowed to have their opinions, too.  Still, it’s a great time to get things done. Your goals are clear, your list is made (the Sun is in Virgo, after all), and you’re ready to go.

Virgo in 2011 has quite a bit of planetary direction changing, which is always interesting. Since it is Virgo time, make notes about how these planetary energies channel into your life, how you feel, think, and act. You’ll find it very interesting!

    People have asked about the Christmas card in this post. I designed and created this set of Christmas cards. The large, round ornament is a NASA picture of the planet that rules the sign (this is Mercury, because Mercury rules Virgo). The smaller ornament on the right is the glyph (letter) that represents the sign in astrological charts (this one is the glyph that looks like the gathered sheaf of barley at harvest time). The smaller ornament on the left is a representation of the major symbol of the sign, usually taken from a map of the constellation. (This one is from an ancient star map of Virgo, with the virgin pictured.)
