4th Advent Post–Cancer time in 2011 (21 June – 23 July)

Okay, so we get the picture now, right? Today I’ll be talking about 21 June – 23 July, 2011, what will be happening next year when the Sun will be in Cancer. I’m going to tell you about the astrological events that will happen during those weeks, and what kind of energy you can expect to have swirling about in your life at that time. This information isn’t specific to any particular birth chart or Sun sign; it’s just about what will be happening for everyone next Summer.

And BTW, the reason I started with Aries is because in the culture of Western Astrology, that’s when the New Year starts.  Just like it’s celebrated in Iran, Bali, and other cultures in March.  I know that will mean that I’ll be talking about Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces after I talk about the other signs, even though they come earlier in the year, but I was trying to be more astrological than calendar-based. I know it’s caused some confusion, but I hope you’ll bear with me, now that I’ve already gotten this far in the series.

So, Cancer time in 2011. The Sun will enter Cancer on 21 June, 2011, on the first day of Summer. Cancer is a cardinal sign, meaning it has the energy to start things. What things is Cancer interested in? Things having to do with feelings and emotions, with caring and nurturing. The seeds of Spring have sprouted, and now it’s time to hold them close to our hearts, give them warmth and water, and watch them grow. So whatever projects you started earlier this year, now is the time to foster them along, with attention and intuition as to what they need.

The first week of Cancer, 2011 will be fairly calm.  On 1 July, though, we will have a New Moon solar eclipse in Cancer. Remember, eclipses can jolt your attention, and with the Moon in Cancer, your attention will be on your emotions. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, the waxing and waning goddess of moods and feelings. Her shadow will darken the Sun, and then the light will come pouring back in, along with all the feelings the darkness brought up. Check in with yourself and your loved ones on the first of July.

The very next day, 2 July, 2011, the happy god Jupiter in Taurus will smile and wave at Chiron in Pisces.  Jupiter in Taurus is practical and down-to-Earth, and with him beaming benevolence at Chiron, we might find it in our hearts to forgive old transgressions and move on with our lives. This can be extremely practical, because it’s often our old pains and fears that hold us back from new directions in life. So even though this is a mild event, it could bring some transformational energy into your life.  That same day, 2 July, will have Mercury leaving Cancer and entering Leo (a few weeks ahead of the Sun). Mercury likes Leo because it gives his expressions the royal note of authority. Just watch out for coming across a bit too arrogant and know-it-all during these weeks. But the sunny, happy energy of Leo is a fine place for Mercury to be, especially while the Sun is in Cancer (it’ll keep us from brooding on problems, which Cancer energy can sometimes lead to).

On the 4th of July, Venus enters Cancer. She’s a loving mother and homemaker in Cancer, so family fun and Summer parties (in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway) are in order.  BBQ’s, new bathing suits, the works.

Later that week, on 7 July, 2011, Jupiter in Taurus trines Pluto in Capricorn. Now this could be a big deal. A trine is a very positive aspect, where the conversation between the two planets goes extremely well. So we have Jupiter, the king of the gods in the heavens, having a very deep and meaningful conversation with his brother Pluto, king of the Underworld. Pluto is about power and transformation, and in Capricorn he’s been “raising Hell” with old power structures that are no longer working. With Jupiter in Taurus bringing some lightness and happiness to the equation, we could see the beginnings of a transformation of the economy, some regaining of power to regular folks, and some hope for the future from practical places.  Let’s keep our eyes on this aspect!

On 9 July, Uranus stations retrograde in Aires. The planet of revolution, rebellion, invention, and innovation has been flying in Aries, but will slow down and turns backwards (actually, it just looks that way, but you’ll feel the energy shift.) Some of those firey visions of a new world may have to be rethought, re-planned, and reworked. Going back to the drawing board isn’t always a bad thing, and with the impatience of Aries, it’s often just the thing to do. So this period will be good for re-evaluating the goals of the revolution, the benefits of the inventions, and the box out of which we’ve been thinking.

The Full Moon in Capricorn on the 15th and 16th of July, 2011 will bring us back down to Earth, and then we will have a quiet week until the Sun moves on to Leo on the 23rd.  There will be a lot going on in Cancer, 2011, so be sure to take care of yourself and enjoy being home with loved ones.

People have asked about the Christmas card in this post. I designed and created this set of Christmas cards. The large, round ornament is a NASA picture of the planet that rules the sign (this is the Moon, because the Moon rules Cancer). The smaller ornament on the right is the glyph (letter) that represents the sign in astrological charts (this one is the glyph that looks like the body of a crab). The smaller ornament on the left is a representation of the major symbol of the sign, usually taken from a map of the constellation. (This one is from an Tarot card of Cancer, with the crab pictured.)
